2025 Senior Five Placement: Subject-Based Criteria Explained

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have made important changes to how we place students into Senior Five classes for 2025. We want to explain these changes in simple terms so everyone can understand our new approach.

What is different this year?

In the past, we looked mainly at overall exam results and division rankings (1, 2, 3 & 4) to place students. Now, we are focusing on how well students performed in specific subjects that matter for their A-Level courses.

How we place students now

We placed students based on their actual grades in subjects they will need for Advanced Level:

• For Science Combinations: Students needed A or B grades in science subjects
• For Arts Combinations: Students could have up to C grades in relevant subjects

We only considered students who passed their Uganda Certificate of Education examinations with Result 1 status.

Our step-by-step process

We created a fair system using these steps:

1. We ranked combinations: We arranged combination options based on weight of respective courses in public universities.
2. We carefully analysed student grades: We looked at each student’s grades in subjects that matter for their chosen combinations.
3. We matched students to the right combinations: We used a computer program to find the best combination match for each student’s strengths

Why this is better for your son

This new approach has several benefits:

• Your son is placed where he can succeed: We gave students the combinations where they have already shown they can do well
• Decisions are based on facts, not opinions: All placements are backed by actual grades from the dataset provided by the Ministry of Education and Sports during the placement exercise that took place on 20^th and 21^st February 2025 in Kampala.
• Changes can be discussed with clear information: If you want to discuss your son’s placement, we have clear records to guide the conversation
